The future is now

“A change is coming, and it’s blue.” That’s the conclusion of an op-ed that looked at why more young Americans are voting Democratic. And it was my conclusion after several hours at the College Democrats/Young Democrats convention in Greenville Saturday.

 

I found an impressive group of smart, dedicated and determined Democrats who are getting involved and leading now. I left with a new optimism about the future.

 

The op-ed is by Charles Blow in The New York Times, who wrote about two Gallup reports: “U.S. Seniors Have Realigned With the Republican Party” and “Young Americans’ Affinity for Democratic Party Has Grown.”

 

Blow wrote, “Part of the reason for the Democratic swing among young people is the incredible diversity of the group. Gallup estimates that 45 percent of Americans 18-29 are nonwhite. But that doesn’t account for all of the change”

 

Gallup noted, “Young adults are not more Democratic solely because they are more racially diverse. In recent years, young white adults, who previously aligned more with the Republican Party, have shifted Democratic. From 1995 to 2005, young whites consistently identified as or leaned Republican rather than Democratic, by an average of 8 points. Since 2006, whites aged 18 to 29 have shown at least a slight Democratic preference in all but one year, with an average advantage of 3 points.”

 

In other words, time is not on the Republicans’ side. As Blow wrote, “The wave of demographic change and the liberal leaning of the young can’t be held back indefinitely through obstruction and aggression.” In fact, GOP voter suppression – along with policies like gay-bashing, immigrant-bashing, minority-bashing, climate change-bashing, teacher-bashing, etc. – only accelerates and hardens young Americans’ attitudes.

 

Then mix in the rising cadre of young leaders I met this weekend. So I tell my aging but young-at-heart Democratic peers: Don’t despair. Get busy making way for and mentoring this new generation. They’re going to save our state.

GOP got this one figured out and new law only allows college students to vote at their school IF they are a resident, which most are not. Then limited early voting, eliminated registering/voting on same day and something about no longer allowing high school students to register to vote at school....

What about liberalism/socialism 'saves' anything? How have DemocRAT 'plans' helped shape the future of our state? How has continued increases in taxes, increases in spending, increases in government give-aways improved the future of our state?

When young, you are supposed to be idealistic. As you age your intelligence is supposed to take over major control from your heart.

Gay-bashing. Is it that the GOP types are bashing gays or are we simply tired of another group wanting special treatment? It's OK, acceptable, expected for Christians to be bashed, but people wanting me to know what goes on their bedrooms, and endorse their behavior, is supposed to be supported and encouraged. Is this backwards?

Immigrant bashing. No such thing happens. Libs refer to people who break the law as immigrants. What GOP types are targeting are law breakers who illegally cross the border, enroll their kids in our schools without paying for it, and often taking jobs away from Americans. We don't dislike immigrants. Some of us, if not most of us, like me are the product of immigrants. I'm only 2nd generation American. But the difference is my family did it the legal way. What GOP types oppose is the lib idea that these law-breakers are to BE REWARDED for their efforts. This is not bashing. It's pointing out the truth. Something libs fight at every turn.

Minority bashing. Who is it that believes minorities can't survive without the help of kindly libs? Do GOP types expect that minorities are people, just like everyone else, and given the chance can actually stand on their own and be self-sufficient? Who is it that constantly rants about blacks not being able to take care of themselves? Who is it that claims requiring people to have a picture ID is discriminating against blacks? It's the libs. Why do libs think it's discriminating against blacks to require them to get a picture taken? Because blacks are incapable of driving themselves to the DMV? Because blacks can't come up with documentation to prove who they are? Because blacks are intimidated by government agencies? Why exactly is it that libs think so little of 'minorities', which is simply lib-speak for black people?

Climate change bashers? Really? Let's talk about a serious topic then maybe we'll be able to have an intelligent discussion. If there were any stats behind the lib belief in climate change we'd be able to determine if GOP types are bashing the idea. But since climate change is an anomaly in science, it's hard to have a discussion about it. You see, science is NOT about consensus. Science is about fact and reproducability. There are conflicting 'facts' about climate change. There is no reproducability about climate change claims. What's the lib plan to combat climate change? They can't express this but GOP types are called bashers. The only thing libs can tell us about climate change plans is that it will cost us one heck of a lot of money. More money than we have. It will cost us every modern luxury, and then some. So the lib plan so far is that we are supposed to live in caves, walk everywhere, live off ONLY grains, never kill another animal for food, stop using anything that's been invented since around 1760. Then perhaps the libs think climate change might stop. Except climate change is documented as happening since the beginning of time. Climate change happened drastically before people occupied the planet. So no idea that libs come up with has ANY merit when it comes to climate change. Debating with libs about ideas like climate change is like discussing it with a cement wall. Pointless. Just like the idea of climate change being man-made and man having any ability to do anything about it. Call us bashers if you will, but we'll continue to call you out of your mind. One statement is true. The other is fantasy.
