If Dan Blue....

As soon as Conor the Jessecrat sat down at our regular political dinner he unfolded a newspaper, pointed, and said, There’s a headline to strike terror in every Congressman’s heart. 

I read ‘Judge Orders Districts Redrawn’ and thought about the half-a-dozen lawsuits in North Carolina about redistricting but it turned out this lawsuit was in Florida where the state constitution makes it illegal for legislators to gerrymander districts for their political advantage. 

 

Mike, a dyed-in-the-wool Republican lawyer, shrugged and said, a Well, there’s no such provision in our state constitution, and Conor nodded and said, But there’slways a reckoning: What are you Republicans going to do if Dan Blue introduces the same law here – vote against  ‘fair districts’ and for gerrymandering?

 

Mike set his lips – then slowly grinned. 

 

Yes, he nodded, in a heartbeat.

Gerry has been and is a friend of both parties. The chances of either party introducing a bill to prevent Gerry from visiting the state is a virtual impossibility. The demons know just as well as the Republicans do that if they send Gerry packing, they will have to play by the same rules eventually. Let's not forget that Gerry was invited into the state on a regular basis when the demon party controlled Raleigh. Did the demons introduce legislation to prevent Gerry from visiting when they were in control? Or did Gerry only become an unwelcome guest when the Republicans took over? Also, the Republicans took over control of Raleigh even though the demons controlled Gerry at the time. It was only after a majority of voters chose a Republican majority that Republicans had the ability to make friends with Gerry.

Dan Blue knows that Gerry will be his friend again eventually. He's not crazy enough to introduce legislation that will tie his hands when/if voters are crazy enough to put the demons in charge. But in the event that it happens, and Dan hopes every day that it does happen, none of the demons, especially Dan, wants to be forced to leave Gerry at the border. Every pol out there, both demons and Republicans, want to be able to invite Gerry to the dinner table any time they want. Currently Gerry is favoring Republicans. Voters may decide that Gerry needs to be a friend of the demons. Then the demons won't care about Gerry anymore. The topic will suddenly go away. And the stories in the used-to-be-news media will also go away since Gerry will be a friend of their demon allies. Gerry is only an occasional unwelcome guest.
