Wake County teacher salary schedules: Before and after the raise

The N.C. General Assembly increased teacher pay. But changes to the structure of the salary schedule make it difficult for taxpayers to understand the dynamics of the raise.

Below is a comparison of Wake County’s 2013-14 and 2014-15 teacher salary schedules.  The annual salary listed includes the local salary supplement, which is one of the state’s largest, so it is not representative of the average North Carolina district.  In addition, the schedule does not include supplements for National Board Certification or advanced degrees.

Note: Budget legislation includes a held harmless clause. Teachers will receive the greater of the

1) Amount specified on the 2014-15 salary schedule below, or

2) The sum of the teacher’s 2013-14 salary plus the annual longevity payment plus an annual bonus of $1,000.

Norm Kelly says:

So every level of teacher in Wake County, except the most senior, get a raise. At least that's what this table shows. Even the TAs appear to get a raise, if I looked at the add'l resources page properly. So, who's complaining? What's the gripe? When the demon party controlled Raleigh & the state budget, how much of a raise did teachers and aids get? How does the raise under the demons compare to the raise under the Republicans? Let's also not forget that almost every year that the demons controlled Raleigh, we were told that the budget had been cut to the bone, there was no room left for cutting, yet spending and taxes went up. Even in those years when teachers DIDN'T get a raise! Remember when the demon party raised the gas tax (at the same time the price of gas was going up!) claiming the state couldn't afford NOT to raise it? Even though none of the residents of the state could afford the higher gas tax either, the demon priority was the states' take on gas taxes! Remember when the demon party implemented a temporary sales tax increase? Then converted it to a permanent sales tax increase? And how did teachers pay fare at that time?

(along with the conversion of the temporary to permanent sales tax increase, the state implemented a 'tax free' weekend so we'd feel good about getting screwed on paying a higher tax the rest of the year. and then the 'tax free' weekend only applied to specific items that the central planners thought would be acceptable to the rest of us. not even ALL items were 'tax free' that weekend, which would actually help offset the higher sales tax the rest of the year! but that's for another post. just wanted to point out the idiocy of the demon side of the argument!)

Remember when Gov Mike stole money from the E911 fund? Remember when Gov Mike stole money from the county sales tax fund? Remember when Gov Bev put a new director of state education in place in her administration but didn't get rid of the existing state administrator? How did the teachers' pay fare under those schemes? Did teacher pay actually go up even with all this scheming by the demons?

So, when all things are compared, are teachers better off now than when the demons ran Raleigh? Only time will tell, but at least the sales tax is coming down!
