McCrory is right about need for highway bonds

Gov. Pat McCrory won half the infrastructure battle this year, getting legislative approval for a $2 billion bond proposal that will be on next March's primary ballot.

If passed, the initiative will fund extensive building on state college campuses and in state parks.

McCrory had pushed for funding for badly needed highway improvements and expansions too, but couldn't get it past a state Senate roadblock. Senate leader Phil Berger says the state's highway trust funds are sufficient for our roadwork needs.

Berger is wrong. Even though lawmakers have ended their annual raids on the funds, which steered some of the money to other projects, there's still not enough to meet our present needs, let alone those in this fast-growing state's future.

If he's re-elected, McCrory told a forum in Cary this week, he'll make another run at a highway and transportation bond package of at least $1 billion. Good. That's desperately needed, as anyone who's driven I-95 lately will confirm. Most of our major highways need rebuilding and expanding, and many of our bridges are overdue for replacement. The highway funds, fueled by steadily diminishing gasoline-tax revenues, aren't up to the challenge. We need to jump-start the effort with another bond package.

Donald Byrd says:

I think not. My road got the tar and sand treatment. We have a trash container site on our road. We have about 500 each cars on this road on every day. On Saturday we have almost 900 extra cars. And the State of NC can not pave our road. We get sand and tar and now all the sand is beside the road. I will vote NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
