Around mid-morning on February 22, 1732, 23-year old Mary Ball Washington, the 2nd wife of Augustine Washington, delivered a baby boy at their modest home on good land near Pope's Creek, Virginia, a tributary of the nearby Potomac River. Mother Mary was orphaned around age 12 and her baby--her first child--was named George, probably to honor Mary's childhood guardian George Eskridge, who was a prominent attorney and had been her family's friend. Today, Mary's baby from that morning 282 years ago is the face on the United States One Dollar bill. Happy Birthday George Washington!
