Democrat Kay Hagan leads Republican Thom Tillis by 6 points in a Civitas Institute Poll released today.
Neither U.S. Senate candidate comes close to 50 percent, however -- largely because Libertarian Sean Haugh gets 9 percent.
The poll has Sen. Hagan over Speaker Tillis, 42-36.
When asked to consider only Hagan or Tillis, respondents favored Hagan 47-43.
When asked if they would rather elect "a Republican who will be a check and balance to President Obama’s policies and programs, and try to gain a Republican majority in the US Senate," or "a Democrat who will support President Obama’s programs and policies, and maintain a Democratic majority in the US Senate," the Republican response had a 49-45 advantage.
But that was narrowed from a 50-40 margin in Civitas' May poll.
Respondents who "definitely" had made up their minds also favored Hagan by a 6-point margin, 36-30-5.
That indicates there are many voters who are willing to be persuaded -- and many (more) millions of dollars will be spent trying to do it.
