After SPIN! Video: Are Charter Schools held to the same standard as traditional?

Published January 25, 2017

After SPIN! "Question to Howard Lee and Joe Mavretic -  A recent report indicated that 40 percent of the graduates from a Durham Charter School received diplomas without meeting the state’s minimum graduation requirements, bringing into question how well charters are being held to the same standards as traditional k-12 public schools. Is this just an isolated case or does our Charter School Advisory Board need to become more active in overseeing these schools?"

Richard L Bunce says:

Government charter schools are held to a much higher standard than traditional government schools. When a parent decides the government charter school is not working for their child and withdraws their child from that school, 100% of the funding for that school for that child is withdrawn as well. Traditional government schools receive significant funding not directly attached to their student population, local property taxes for instance.
